Faye does not walk the Everywhen alone. She rolls with a two-companion party: Rue, an enchanted ribbon bound to her sword, and Phranque, a talking cosmic cube. Both help her in combat and exploration as she crosses the worlds of the afterlife trying to get home. IGN flat-out called the trio “gaming’s weirdest threesome,” and they’re not wrong.
Here’s who they are and what each one actually does.
The two companions at a glance
Rue
Enchanted ribbon-sword guardian · voiced by Perlina Lau
A living, enchanted ribbon bound to a devastatingly powerful sword. Rue's job is to keep that blade out of the wrong hands — and once Faye earns Rue's trust, the sword becomes Faye's main weapon. In a fight, the ribbons whip out to strike enemies at range.

Phranque
Cosmic cube · voiced by Jack Quaid
A curious, earnest, talking cube — basically a big blue block of Jell-O with a personality. He'll do whatever it takes to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen. He was the breakout star of the State of Play reveal.
Rue — the ribbon that guards the sword
The official PlayStation Blog describes Rue as “the enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping the devastatingly powerful sword in her care from falling into the wrong hands.” That’s the whole pitch: Rue is the safeguard on a weapon too dangerous to leave lying around.
Faye is no stranger to legendary weapons — she’s the one who forged the Leviathan Axe Kratos carries. When she arrives in the Everywhen, she earns Rue’s trust, and the sword-and-ribbon becomes the core of her new fighting style. This is not the Blades of Chaos and not the Leviathan Axe. It’s a brand-new weapon identity built around Rue.

In combat, Rue isn’t a sidekick standing off to the side — Rue is part of the weapon in Faye’s hand. When Faye strikes, the ribbons whip and extend to hit distant foes, feeding into her fast, fluid, ground-to-air combat. Alongside Phranque, Rue also helps move the story along: the two companions are the ones who reveal to Faye that this place is the afterlife of the gods, and they push her to keep going.
No official Rue character headshot exists yet. The screenshots here show Rue in its in-game form — the ribbons on Faye’s sword — because that’s how Rue appears in the world.
Phranque — the talking cube (short version)
Phranque gets his own full page because he became the meme of the reveal, but here’s the quick read. Phranque is “a curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition” who “will do whatever it takes to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen” — that’s the official wording. His name is pronounced “Frank.”

Faye first meets Phranque after she’s thrown into captivity early in the demo. The cube has a sword stuck inside it and helps her escape. In a fight, he rams into enemies, and — the moment everyone clipped — Faye bounces off him like a trampoline to launch into the air.
How the party works together
The companions aren’t just flavor. Per the PlayStation Blog, they “assist in combat and exploration” as Faye travels between worlds. Rue arms her and extends her reach; Phranque blocks, rams, and doubles as a launch pad. Together they also carry chunks of the story — they’re the ones who explain the Everywhen and keep Faye moving toward home.
If you want the full breakdown of how the sword, ribbons, and cube-trampoline plug into Faye’s combat, that’s on the combat page.
